As people we all have a desire to be connected to nature, which scientists call ‘biophilia’. During the working week we are often stripped of our nature working in large sterile offices with no connection to the natural environment. Then at weekend we retreat to the tranquillity of local national parks and beauty spots to re-balance the mind and get our fix of nature.
Studies have shown that being surrounded by flowers and greenery can have a positive effect on our happiness and wellbeing, so could bringing more flowers and greenery in to the office working environment help improve our wellbeing and increase productivity?
Simply adding some greenery in the form of flowers or indoor plants can have major positive benefits for employees and their organisations. The same goes for remote or home workers, too. Here are a few reasons why you should invest in flowers and plants for your own desk, or your wider workplace.
They help to reduce stress
Plants are not just for the garden as they have a number of health benefits too, including the ability to soothe headaches, calm ailments and reduce everyday stresses and strains.
If you spend a lot of time indoors, be this due to long working hours or weather conditions, poor air quality is bound to affect your health. In fact, indoor toxins can have a detrimental effect on our health. Such toxins can cause allergies, asthma, inflammation, anxiety and stress.
Thankfully, there are a number of ways to improve your indoor health, one of which includes bringing the benefits of the outdoors inside.
They help to increase productivity
Flowers look and smell amazing, but that’s not all they do! Studies and scientific evidence have proven that having flowers in the workplace can increase our ability to work better. This is for a number of reasons, for both men and women.
Studies have found that both men and women performed better in an environment that was decorated with fresh plants and flowers. This was in terms of innovative thinking, generating good ideas and problem solving. It found that men were able to generate around 30% more ideas in an office with flowers than when in an office that was sparse and dull.
Rosemary helps to improve your memory
Rosemary, a perennial herb and a member of the mint family that is native to the Mediterranean region. As well as improving air quality, it’s also said to improve memory function, reduce stress and banish anxiety.
